In the north of Guatemala is the Tikal National Park. It occupies almost 60,000 hectares and in 1979 it was declared a World Heritage Site, both for its history and its nature. This wonderful place is considered the largest excavated site in the Americas. The reason? The remains of the Mayan civilization that were located there. They occupy about 1,600 hectares and are located in the center of the national park. The city of Tikal became so important in its time that it established relations with the great metropolis of Teotihuacán, in Mexico.

The Tikal National Park is one of the most famous in Guatemala, and it is the cradle of one of the most important pre-Columbian civilizations. The park was founded on May 26, 1955.

The vegetation in this area is totally jungle and, as we mentioned, here are the remains of the largest Mayan city that has been discovered to date. Until recently this place was a mystery. There were many legends that spoke about the existence of a lost city.

However, all these conjectures ended in the year 1848. That year, Amrosio Tut visualized the crests of the temples in the distance and reported it to the governor of the area. After this, they arrived at the site and found some remains. In 1853 the discovery was published by the Berlin Academy of Sciences.

Later, the University of Pennsylvania began with the excavations and little by little, the mysteries were solved. The process took approximately 13 years, in which most of the remains of the archaeological zone were discovered. However, there are still places to discover.

Who were the Mayans?

The Mayans were one of the most important pre-Columbian civilizations in history. They stood out for their art, architecture and their hieroglyphic-based writing systems. And also for its mathematical and astronomical systems.

This civilization inhabited the city of Tikal from the 6th century BC. C to the 10th century AD The nucleus is comprised of temples, palaces and public squares with access ramps. And around these places are the houses.

The name of this city, Tikal, in the Mayan language meant “at the water well.” It is thought that this name could refer to the ancient water reserves that existed in the place. Although there are those who think that it can also mean “place of voices” or “place of languages”. However, the first name he received was Yax Mutul, which means “first mutal.”

However, if you decide to do it by car, you must take the Atlantic route (CA-9) until you reach Morales, and from there take the route to Ciudad de las Flores (CA-13). When you get to Mechor de Mencos, take the detour to the left in Aldea Ixlú, and you will arrive at the Remate. From there, following the road you will reach the park.

The entrance fee is approximately US $20. Although the price is paid in quetzals. Credit cards are not accepted, so we recommend you bring it in cash. The hours are from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Sunday.
