This park has almost 4000 hectares of extension, that is to say, that it occupies more than 10% of the surface of La Gomera. It owes its name to the Alto de Garajonay, the highest point on the island, which reaches 1,500 meters. The minimum level is 650 meters, in the hamlet of Cedro.

If there is something for which the Garajonay National Park stands out, it is for its unique vegetation. Here dominates the so-called Canarian monteverde, composed especially by laurel forest and fatal-heath. These two types of forest cover more than 85% of the park’s surface.

The fauna that lives here is also important. It houses about a thousand species of invertebrates of which 150 are endemic. Those of vertebrates are reduced to 38, especially reptiles and birds. Regarding the latter, it is necessary to name the rabiche pigeons and the turque pigeons.

The best way to discover all the natural wonders that the Garajonay National Park hides is by taking a hiking route. There are more than a dozen tours inside this fabulous natural space.

It is important that you know that there is the possibility of free guided tours. They are held every Friday of the year and on Wednesdays in July, August and September for the general public. Group visits are also organized.

In any case, it is essential to arrange the visit in advance at the park’s Visitor Center. And it is convenient to do it in time to make sure you have a place, since there are limited, 20 people per guide.

Routes for everyone

One of the most common routes is that of the hermitage of Lourdes, which begins in Reventón Oscuro and ends in the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. It has a linear route, is of little difficulty and only takes 40 minutes to complete.

Another simple route is that of the Bailadero. It starts from the viewpoint of the same name and has a length similar to the previous one.

On the contrary, if you want to do a somewhat more complicated route, you can follow the circular route Agando-La Laja-Agando. To do this, you have to go to the main road, at the height of Roque Agando. There the journey begins, which lasts just over three hours, depending on the pace at which you go.

In addition to doing a route, you can discover other areas of the park, such as the Laguna Grande.  It is a recreational area that has a restaurant, a playground, picnic tables … There are also recreational areas in the areas of the hermitage of Lourdes, Las Creces and Espina.

Equally recommended is the educational area of ​​the Arboretum of Meriga, designed to get to know the trees and shrubs of the Canarian monteverde. A good way to get to know the vegetation of the Garajonay National Park better, don’t you think?

Information for visiting the park on the island of La Gomera

Garajonay National Park can be accessed any day of the year. The Game of Balls visitor center opens from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day, while the Laguna Grande information point opens an hour earlier. They are only closed on December 25 and January 1.

In addition to these spaces where you can get information on all the wealth of the park, you can admire the beauty of its landscapes thanks to a network of viewpoints. The one at Alto de Garajonay, El Rejo, El Bailadero or Los Roques are just some of them.
