The CN Tower in Toronto is the best known symbol of this Canadian city. We could say that it is a masterpiece of the country’s engineering. Its construction was a challenge
At the time, the CN Tower in Toronto was the highest independent infrastructures built by man, and remains at the top. For this reason, it now represents numerous income for the city due to its attractiveness from the tourist point of view.
The tower is 550 meters high. Construction began in February 1973, finishing in 1976, after 40 months of hard work. In its day it cost 300 million Canadian dollars. So in 1995 the American Society of Civil Engineers ranked it one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
Getting closer to the CN Tower in Toronto
This tower has two observation platforms and a 102-meter-high telecommunications antenna at the top.
The top platform is 447 meters high, it is the Skypod. It is divided into three areas: the Radio & TV technological facilities, below it is the famous revolving restaurant and then the observation floor and cafeteria.
On another floor, which is 346 meters high, there is another observation deck and viewpoint where we can feel the air from outside. There is also the glass floor that is responsible for bordering the central core.
How is it built?
It is made up of a main hexagonal hollow pillar. The first thing that was done was a well 15 meters deep, to later melt 7000 cubic meters of cement, installing 46 tons of reinforcing bars and 36 steel cables. All this created a 6.7 meter thick wall, something essential for the foundations.
Once this was done, in order to build the base of the main pillar, a sliding former machine was used. In its time it was a colossal merit of the engineers, as it was a large metal platform that rose 6 meters a day on jacks.
The Skypod had to use 46 hydraulic jacks attached to cables that were responsible for hanging from a steel and wood crown. They were slowly raised to the final position, and then used to create the supports on which the base of the main level rests.
It was built in cement, poured into a wooden formwork and attached to steel bars supported by the lower deck. Then it was reinforced by a large compression steel band just around the outside.
In the case of the metallic telecommunications antenna, in order to transmit radio and television signals, it was located on the crown of the tower. A helicopter was necessary to install the antenna in position.
A walk through the structure of Toronto’s CN Tower
The main structure is a hollow pillar made of steel and cement. It has six elevators, stairs and connections, and it is where the power distribution takes place. Beneath the main platform, the 3 large support columns make the tower look like it is a large tripod.
Both the glass floor and the observation deck are at 342 meters. Its six glass elevators ascend and descend the outer zone of the nucleus at 6 meters per second. In addition, it has a 1776-step metal emergency staircase that reaches the level of the Skypod and an additional elevator for emergencies.
The transmitting antenna is made up of 44 pieces of steel, the heaviest being 8 tons. As for its lighting, it has 1330 LED lights, placed inside the bottom of the elevators. The fire hose is located at the base of the structure, being capable of sending 2,200 liters per minute to any part of the tower.
