Your discovery and protection
The Verdon Regional Natural Park area has always been inhabited, even since the beginning of prehistory, when the first populations settled in these territories. The caves that border the Middle and Lower Verdon gorges, inhabited since that time, are a testimony of this settlement.
The 20th century was marked by the ‘discovery’ of the Gorges du Verdon – Gorges du Verdon – by the geologist Edouard-Alfred Martel and a group of locals led by Isidoro Blanc. In honor of these expeditionists, the Blanc-Martel trail, an incredible hiking area, is named after that.
In the middle of the 20th century, some five important dams were built on the site, which modified the landscape and changed the way of life of those who resided there. Subsequently, a military camp and a center for nuclear studies were built, and even a nuclear fusion reactor was created.
Faced with these events, the inhabitants chose to start developing respectful activities in this place. This led to the protection of the Verdon as a natural area and, later, as a natural park.
