The entrance way to the Amacayacu National Natural Park is the city of Leticia. To get there, it is best to fly to its Alfredo Vásquez Cobo international airport. And once in the city it is possible to take a boat to sail to the park in less than two hours.

Upon arrival we will be greeted by the visitor center of the Amacayacu National Natural Park and it is possible to find modest accommodations right there. And even in indigenous communities there is also the possibility of spending the night. However, if you prefer, there are more modern hotels in the vicinity of the protected area.

As for its flora, we are talking about a tropical jungle. Here the hot and humid climate favors a thick forest with trees that reach up to 40 meters in height and whose crowns create a canopy that barely allows sunlight to pass through. There, on the banks of the river, various species of palms, cedars, mahogany, blood-toro and many more grow.

And regarding its fauna, there are up to 500 different types of birds. But also, the pink dolphin lives in the river. Or on land there are mammals such as the jaguar, the manatee or the puma. Not to mention the smallest monkey in the world: the lion tamarin. But the largest freshwater turtle on the planet also lives here, as well as species as dangerous as the anaconda or the black caiman.

This is one of the most popular activities within the Amacayacu National Natural Park. It is about making a journey of more or less a kilometer that will take us to the top of the jungle canopy. You walk on a suspension bridge about 30 meters high above the jungle. A completely different and fascinating vision of this place.

Another of the usual activities in the Amacayacu National Natural Park are canoe trips through the Amazon. You get to the island of the Micos, full of monkeys. Or you can see amazing water lilies like the lotus flower. You can also do other routes to the Tarapoto lakes that will take us to spot pink and gray freshwater dolphins.

Meet the Tikuna

The Tikuna ethnic group is fully integrated into the Amacayacu National Natural Park conservation project. And they even actively participate in its tourist exploitation. In some cases they can provide accommodation to those who come to discover this jewel of nature.

In addition,  you can visit them to buy their handicrafts or the food that they have extracted from the jungle for centuries. Buying these products from them and discovering their way of life is the best lesson that a visit to the Amacayacu National Natural Park in Colombia provides us.
