Are you planning to make a trip to or from Gran Canaria? If you are going to leave the Gran Canaria airport, here you will find all the information you need to get your bearings and to get there from different parts of the island.
In the same way, if you are going to travel from the Peninsula or from some other point in the world to the Canary Islands, you will surely arrive at this airport. Keep reading these tips so you don’t feel lost when you get off the plane.
The largest airport in the Canary Islands
The airport of Gran Canaria opened in April 1930. It was originally conceived as an important stopover on the routes connecting Europe, America and Africa.
Today, it is considered the largest airport in passenger and cargo traffic in the Canary Islands. In addition, it has become the sixth in all of Spain, with its more than 13 million passengers in 2017.
Where is it located?
This airport is located to the east of the island of Gran Canaria, near the city of Telde. It is also known as the Gando airport, since it was built on the moor of the same name, near the bay of the same name.
The bay of Gando (and therefore the airport) is about 20 kilometers from the center of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the capital. Therefore, it is very easy to get to the city and there are several means for it. Next, we will explain what they are.
How to get to Gran Canaria airport
If you leave the capital or come from the south of the island, you will have to follow the GC-1 road. It is the road that crosses the island and that will take you to the airport, as it passes through the municipality of Telde. If you leave from another point on the island, you will have no problem following the indications until you reach this road.
Bus lines that pass through the airport
The bus is, surely, the best method to move from the airport to your destination and vice versa. Next, we will collect in a list the bus routes that pass through the airport:
- 1 : Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – Puerto de Mogán
- 11 : Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – Agüimes
- 36 : Maspalomas Lighthouse – Telde
- 5: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – Maspalomas Lighthouse
- 60 : Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – Gran Canaria Airport
- 66 : Maspalomas Lighthouse – Gran Canaria Airport
- 90 : Maspalomas Lighthouse – Telde
- 91 : Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – Playa del Cura
Although these are the routes that include the Gran Canaria airport as one of their stops, we recommend that you always ask someone in the area to make sure, or the bus driver himself. You can’t risk missing your flight!
At the airport, the bus stops are located outside the departures floor. Tickets can be purchased once on the bus.
The taxi is, without a doubt, the fastest method to get to the Gran Canaria airport. And it is that, from the center of the capital it only takes 20 minutes to get there. It may be more comfortable than the bus if you have a lot of luggage.
Also, the rates are cheaper than on the Peninsula, which is a bonus. Of course, you must make sure to ride in an official taxi. Check that the taxi is white with a red stripe. In addition, it must have the coat of arms of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The official airport taxi ranks are located on the ground floor, in Arrivals. Never accept an offer from a driver outside the official stop, as you could be the victim of a scam.
If you have a getaway to the Canary Islands planned, you will surely arrive at this airport, since it is the most important in the archipelago. And, if you have finished your vacation and come home, you will also get out of here. So keep the arrival and departure routes in mind so you don’t miss your flight !
